Robson, currently ranked 308 in the world, beat a player from the top 100 for the first time in nearly three years during the first round of qualifying at Edgbaston Priory Club.

But the former British No 1 then lost 6-1, 6-3 to Katerina Siniakova of the Czech Republic.

Britain's Johanna Konta, Heather Watson, Tara Moore and Naomi Broady are all in the first round of the tournament, due to be played today.

Konta, who reached the semi-final of the Australian Open, was drawn against Moore, but a new draw was made after Halep's injury.

Britain's number one was bumped up to eighth seed and will now face Japan's Misaki Doi.

World number three Agnieszka Radwanska is the top seed in Birmingham, while two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova also features in the week-long WTA tournament.
