Rosa fights back to clinch Aldridge title

Adrian Rosa survived a considerable scare to win the Aldridge and District Snooker League individual title.

The former pro and 2015 West Midlands champion was a big favourite going into the final against Simon Gough at Wednesfield Conservative Club.

But Gough stunned Rosa, and the large crowd, by flying out of the blocks with breaks of 32 and 60 to take the opening two frames of the contest.

The suspicion Rosa was firmly on the ropes looked like being confirmed as Gough went ahead in the next frame and looked likely to go into the interval with a 3-0 advantage.

But he spurned several chances to clinch it, allowing Rosa to fightback and clear the colours to nick the frame and finally give himself a foothold in the match.

He then levelled things up at 2-2 after holding his nerve to win a scrappy fourth frame in which both players missed chances.

With just two more frames needed for victory, Rosa found his potting boots and with Gough beginning to run out of gas, swiftly wrapped up the win.

A superb break of 82 was enough to win the fifth frame and put Rosa ahead for the first time in the match, before a 67 in the sixth made certain of the title.

It completed a fine first season in the league for Rosa, who had previously claimed victory in the Masters (over-40s) tournament and the Foursomes with the 12-year-old Ryley Archer, while he also recorded the highest break with 104.

He picked up the trophies at the league's annual presentation evening, which immediately followed the individual final.

Premier League winners St Johns were also honoured at the ceremony, with their young star Riley Parsons picking up his award as the league's junior champion.

Team-mate Jack Harris recorded the most Premier League wins, with Phil Bush earning that accolade in Division One.

Bloxwich Memorial's Andy Price collected his award after winning the Captains Cup, while Lee Bannister won the handicap tournament. The awards were presented by league chairman Bryn Williams.

Back on the baize, Wednesfield Cons B clinched promotion to the Premier League after seeing off Stafford Road B 3-2 in a play-off.

The two teams had finished joint third in Division One, meaning that a play-off was required for only the second time in league history.

Wednesfield served notice of intent by fielding their two strongest players in the opening two frames. It was a move which paid off as John Schneider and Dean Evans put them into a 2-0 lead and firmly in command of the tie.

Stafford Road hit back through Dave Wilcox but their hopes were then extinguished by Pete Slatcher, who won the fourth frame on the pink to put Wednesfield into an unassailable 3-1 lead, before Chris Baugh won a final frame consolation.
