Cancer-fight Tom Fell in return to action

Wolverhampton cricketer Tom Fell made a courageous return to the sport as he continues his fight against cancer.

The 22-year-old, who is undergoing chemotherapy to treat testicular cancer, hit six fours and a six in his innings of 41 from 51 balls for Worcestershire's second XI in their game with Sussex at Kidderminster yesterday.

Fell, who has turned out in the past for Wolverhampton in the Birmingham League and was the county's leading-run scorer last season, underwent surgery after first being diagnosed with cancer last October.

He was cleared to play grade cricket in Australia but suffered a setback last month, when a scan detected a small area of cancer in his lymph nodes.

Fell is currently undergoing three sessions of chemotherapy but indicated he would try to play second XI cricket if he felt well enough. His determination to keep playing cricket has amazed his team-mates.

"Tom has made us feel more positive about him by being so positive about it himself," explained Worcestershire team-mate Joe Clarke. "He's already been into the ground one day and the lads who saw him in the nets said you wouldn't know anything was wrong."
