Gary Hackett's men had their fate in their own hands, holding fifth position by a point going into today's final fixtures.

Fellow play-off contenders Salford City - with Darlington already crowned champions - were the visitors to Amblecote today.

Salford come out on top 2-1, a result that allowed the team below them to leapfrog them and extend their season in the last game.

Workington, sixth going into play, realistically needed to win at home to Buxton, a point behind with a five inferior goal difference.

They emphatically thumped Buxton 5-0, with news of Stourbridge's defeat filtering through to their elated supporters back in Cumbria.

They face a long trip to Blyth Spartans on Tuesday night, though, with the victor to take on either big-spending Salford or Ashton United.
