Walsall on the look-out for a new head coach

Walsall are looking to appoint a new head coach for next season after a 27-8 defeat at Hereford sealed their relegation from Midlands One West.

They have only managed three wins from 23 games this term, and had to make several changes for the loss due to injuries and unavailability at the weekend.

Walsall still have three league games left to play – including the visit of Bournville on Saturday – but are already planning for life in Midlands Two West.

Director of rugby Robert Harding reckons the club are looking to appoint a new head coach, and has announced his intention to step down from his role.

He said: "It is time for a fresh face to come in now. We have a history of appointing head coaches from the inside.

"But we are looking for somebody from the outside to come in and bring fresh ideas. We are looking to make sure we are competitive next season.

"It is not a question of bouncing straight back, we won't underestimate the league, but hopefully we can benefit from someone new and innovative."

Also in league action were Rugeley, who won 34-14 at Church Stretton in Midlands Four West. They face second-placed Barton-Under-Needwood on Saturday.

Kidderminster Carolians made it through to the final of the North Midlands Shield with a 25-7 victory against Veseyans.

A try from Ben Turner put the result beyond any doubt, and the final against Old Saltieans will be played on May 8.

Stourbridge return to league action this Saturday. Promotion from National Two North now looks to be a tall order.

But a win over mid-table Chester at home would keep up the pressure on Sedgley Park.
