The clash saw the Tigers make ground on second-placed Wombourne, now just a point behind in third of the West Midlands League Division Two.

The visitors began their first clash of the year slowly in a first set littered with unforced errors and mistakes.

Despite Rob Wall's side improving towards the end of the first set, Wombourne came out on top 25-21.

Sets two and three were a different story. Tettenhall's hitters played a more consistent game, putting more pressure on Wombourne which led to errors leaking into the hosts' play.

The understanding between setters Arnie Smith and man of the match Alex Benn developed and Tettenhall's fluency and rhythm increased. Both sets were tight, but Tettenhall came through 25-21 and 26-24.

After falling behind, Wombourne upped their tempo at the start of the fourth in a very tightly-contested affair.

A couple of service errors from Tettenhall led to Wombourne edging in front, keeping their nerve and taking the set 25-21 to set up the decider.

The Tigers made a strong start to the decisive set, serving strongly throughout, with the addition of powerful hitting from Rashad Ali and Harry Greensill.

Wombourne rallied, but Tettenhall fought hard through solid blocking at the net from George Smith and Dan Blake. They took the fifth set 15-11 and claimed the win.

Coach Wall was delighted with his side's application, saying: "Five-set matches are always tough, but they are great matches to win.

"Credit to our players, four of whom are under 18, for showing mental toughness and resilience, and for also playing some excellent technical volleyball."

The Tigers travel to Cleobury Mortimer for a men's cup tie on Wednesday.
