Ben's gamble fails to pay off for Tipton

Tipton Harriers runner Ben Gamble was too quick for his own good in the Stafford Harriers 'Limp Wrist' race at Castlefields.

Gamble recorded the quickest time, 26.43, of the 118 entrants but it still saw him finish down the standings due to race rules.

The event requires athletes to make a pre-race prediction of their finishing time.

They then run the five-mile course without any timing devices – the closest to their prediction lands the winning position.

The ruling saw Gamble finish 37th after he came home 48 seconds quicker than his prediction.

The winner was Jack Hodkinson (Stafford Harriers) who finished in 40:22, just one second ahead of his prediction.

The race raised around £500 for Katharine House Hospice.

Stafford Harriers juniors wrapped up their season with an awards evening.

The Under-15 girls received their trophies for finishing runners-up in their category.

Individual awards went to: George Hodkinson (Boy Runner of the Year), Taygen Pike (Girl Runner of the Year), Ben Deakin (Newcomer Boy of the Year), Chloe Burrows (Newcomer Girl of the Year), Matthew Hilsdon (Improved Boy of the Year), Olivia Black (Improved Girl of the Year).
