Glassboys re-create stunning Cup form to progress in Trophy

Stourbridge continued their stunning Cup form this season with a 4-2 success against Spennymoor Town in the FA Trophy third qualifying round.

Glassboys boss Gary Hackett rang the changes with next Saturday's eagerly awaited FA Cup clash against Eastleigh in mind, making six changes from the side that beat Marine in their previous outing and that clearly showed in the first half as lower level Spennymoor were much the better side.

Hackett admitted: "In the first half we were below par and very fortunate to find ourselves in front.

We changed the formation in the second half and the outcome was very pleasing."

Spennymoor should have built a compelling lead by half-time after Liam Henderson hammered a shot against the Glassboys' post on 19 minutes while goalkeeper Lewis Solly produced two top class saves to keep out goalbound shots from Gavin Cogdon and then Andy Stephenson just after the half-hour mark.

But after looking second best for most of the half, Stourbridge took the lead on 37 minutes when Drew Canavan crossed from the right for Mark Wright to smash home at the far post.

Spennymoor struck back immediately when Stephenson's 41st-minute corner picked out central defender Joe Tait who netted with a downward header.

Determined Spennymoor then took the lead on 53 minutes when Stourbridge's defence backed off for Stephenson to let fly with a fabulous 25-yard effort.

Stourbridge levelled matters on 66 minutes when Ben Billingham's pin-point free-kick picked out skipper Stuart Pierpoint who climbed highest in a crowded goalmouth to head home.

Two minutes later, Stourbridge were ahead, Justin Richards cutting inside to rifle home from the edge of the box.

Now the momentum was with Stourbridge and Junior Smikle found himself denied a further goal on 72 minutes following a fantastic fingertip save from Spennymoor shot-stopper Dan Lowson.

But Stourbridge duly added a fourth on 87 minutes when a slide-rule pass from Smikle sent striker Tyree Clarke scurrying down the right flank before crossing along the goalmouth where Lowson failed to gather, enabling Wright to turn home.
