Hughes bowed out of the Open to a formidable Darryl Fitton, who was in imperious form as he claimed a 4-1 victory.

But there was no stopping 'Yozza' in the Classic, going up the gears from the last 32 when he put out Jersey's Edward Le Bailly 4-1.

Another impressive 4-1 victory over Martin Atkins put him into the quarter-finals, where he whitewashed former world champion Andy Fordham 4-0.

A close-run last four clash with Welshman Jim Williams saw him nudge through to the final 4-3, setting up the decider with Scott Waites, who he beat 5-4.

Hughes, who is ranked No 4 with the BDO, is preparing to return to the World Championship at Lakeside, having made his debut there at the start of the year.

He'll need to see off Scotland's Ross Montgomery to emulate his second round run and meet either Gary Robson or Madars Razma in the next phase.
