The 22-year-old – one of four local golfers taking part – will be making his third trip to the prestigious competition, which is this year taking place in Scotland at Carnoustie and Panmure.

Sheridan-Mills, from Willenhall, missed the cut in 2013 and 2014 but is determined this year will be different.

He said: "It is my third time there. It is obviously a very tough competition because you have got all the best amateurs from all over the world playing. This and the US Amateur Championships are probably the most prestigious amateurs competitions.

"It is top of the list in terms of where I want to peak and perform at my best."

The format will see two rounds of stroke play today and tomorrow with the top 64 players plus ties advancing to the match play stages.

It is a gruelling format which will see a champion crowned on Saturday after six arduous days of intense competition.

But Sheridan-Mills is undaunted and he said: "I have just tried to prepare myself the best I possibly can to give myself the best opportunity I can.

"Whatever happens happens but I know deep down I am good enough to get through and maybe even win the competition."

Enville's Robert Burlison and Ryan Cornfield will also be launching their campaigns for British Amateur glory today, as will Beau Desert's Richard Mansell.

The amateur champion will earn a place in the 144th Open at St Andrews and the 2016 US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pennsylvania. Traditionally, an invitation is also extended to the winner to play in the Masters at Augusta.

They will have to overcome a world-class field which includes 284 other players from 30 different countries if they are to claim such a prize.

But Sheridan-Mills said: "It is everyone's dream to win it because of all the accolades that come with it."
