Jamie Hughes goes through in BDO worlds
Tipton's Jamie Hughes is through to the second round of his BDO World Championship debut with a 3-1 victory over Michel van der Horst tonight.
The Black Country thrower prevailed in sets at Lakeside after getting on top and staying there for most of the match,
First blood did go to van der Horst as he struck double 20 to take the opening leg, before Hughes replied with his third dart at the same bed.
A first 180 of the game went to Hughes in the next leg, but van der Horst quickly replied with his own maiden maximum.
Not to be undone, Hughes hit another 180 before the second leg was out, before the Dutchman took out 73 to go 2-0 up.
It was tops-tastic as Hughes took all three of the next three legs on that bed, to steal the first set from under his nose.
A horror start to the second set allowed van der Horst to see out 37, after Hughes had missed three darts at double four to nudge ahead, and he added to his advantage on double 10.
Double 16 halved the deficit for Hughes, before a well-ahead van der Horst scored double eight with his first arrow to level the sets.
But he then went and fluffed five darts at a double when the players returned to the stage, Hughes back on tops to break the deadlock in the third set.
The same bed put him in command in leg two, double eight with his first throw the next time around putting him into the driving seat 2-1.
Van der Horst soon hit double four to bring himself back into it at the start of the fourth set, his second 180 in the second leg spurring him into further action.
Hughes took the wind out of him with the highest checkout of the match, double 18 taking out 110 to level.
He then looked in command looking for 76 but spurned two darts at a double, returning to land four and move to within a leg of the match.
A maximum in the last leg looked to put the icing on the cake, but van der Horst responded on double 10 for 57 to keep the game alive.
In the dying embers, the European visitor struck another maximum but he couldn't stop Hughes getting over the line, double 16 seeing him home on 76.
