Injury for Edwards adds to Wolves' pain

Wolves were today facing up to a double blow to their promotion hopes after losing Dave Edwards as they surrendered their unbeaten run to Mick McCarthy's Ipswich.

Edwards looks like being out for some time after hobbling off with knee ligament damage with just 14 minutes gone as Kenny Jackett's side deservedly lost 2-1 at Portman Road. Mistakes from midfielders Kevin McDonald and Lee Evans were punished by Daryl Murphy on 35 and 59 minutes either side of James Henry's 53rd-minute equaliser.

Wolves' first defeat in six and only their third Championship loss of the season saw Ipswich leapfrog them on goal difference.

And now they face a big test on Saturday at Derby without key midfielder Edwards.

Boss Kenny Jackett greets former Wolves manager Mick McCarthy.

"Dave got a knee ligament injury – it's never nice when you get a kick on the knee like that and it was a bad tackle," said boss Kenny Jackett.

"He's been a good player for us so far this season and the combination between him, Kevin McDonald and Lee Evans has been strong."

Jackett defended McDonald and Evans, whose mistakes led to the goals.

"Both had plenty of time and weren't rushed, but they have been good players for us and they can get on the ball," said the boss.

Wolves were second best and, after a lacklustre first half for the second match in a row, failed to create the chances, despite a slight improvement after the break.

Michael Jacobs was denied a possible early penalty, Leon Clarke prodded inches wide and Matt Doherty curled over from deep in the box.

But Ipswich could have won by a greater margin after Jay Tabb and David McGoldrick twice missed chances in a dominant first half from the hosts.

And Jackett had no complaints at the loss, adding: "The flow of the game went more towards our goal than theirs and their forwards worked our goalkeeper more."

Meanwhile, the writing looks to be on the wall for on-loan Hull forward Yannick Sagbo, who failed to make the 18 for the first time.
