West Midlands play part in Invictus Games

Injured ex-servicemen from the West Midlands are among more than 400 athletes preparing to take part in the Prince Harry-inspired Invictus Games, which were starting today.

A team of more than 130 competitors from Britain will take part in the Paralympic-style games, which were designed by the prince for people injured while serving in the armed forces.

The team will include wheelchair basketball players Andrew Roberts from Wolverhampton and Rick Powell from Birmingham, cyclist Clive Smith from Hednesford and archer Paul Bennett, from Walsall.

The games were launched last night with an opening ceremony.

The inaugural Invictus Games are being held in London and events will take place in some of the venues used during the 2012 Olympics.

It will go on for four days with more than 400 competitors from 13 nations competing in nine different sports, adapted for disabled athletes.

Wheelchair rugby and archery will take place on Friday, Saturday will see wheelchair basketball, indoor rowing and road cycling and the games will end on Sunday with sitting volleyball, powerlifting, swimming
