Ellie Simmonds breaks her own world record
Walsall swimmer Ellie Simmonds broke her own world record to take her second gold medal of the week at the IPC European Championships.
The 19-year-old Paralympic star took more than three tenths of a second off her previous world record as she won the S6 200m individual medley.
She had set a world record in Montreal almost a year ago but bettered it to finish in 3min, 4.07sec and beat Ukraine's Yelyzaveta Mereshko into second place.
She said: "Every race I swim means as much to me and it was such a tough race. But I'm so over the moon to swim a world record.
"I've got a bit of a headache now! I swam the fly and hit my head on the wall and went into backstroke.
"I thought 'oh my gosh, my head' but I was so pleased.
"On the breaststroke I could see the Ukrainian who beat me in the freestyle on Wednesday so I knew I had to give myself such a lead because she could beat me on the freestyle.
"So I just got my head down and gave it everything I had and I was so happy it was a world record."
