Jonathan Flatt backed to be latest homegrown success for Wolves
Youngster Jonathan Flatt was today backed to be the latest homegrown Wolves keeper to be a success.
The 19-year-old from Sedgley made his senior debut in Wednesday's 3-1 win against Bohemians, keeping a clean sheet in his 45 minutes.
Second-choice Aaron McCarey, 22, who replaced Flatt at half-time, also made his Wolves bow at Dalymount Park, four years ago.
And senior keeper Carl Ikeme, who emerged as one of the top-rated homegrown goalkeeping academy graduates with Matt Murray and Wayne Hennessey, believes Flatt can go all the way.
"Jon's got a great attitude and a lot of ability and with those two qualities, I'm sure he'll kick on," said the 28-year-old.
"He's still very young so he needs more training and more games because as a keeper, it generally takes longer to come through.
"But I'm sure he'll break through here eventually.
"He's been with us for a while and he's worked hard and he's looking good so it was great to see him play, especially as he did well too.
"I'm very happy for him."
For Wolverhampton-born Flatt, playing for his hometown club is a dream come true.
"He's Wolves through and through as we all know in the goalkeeping department – he comes to watch all the games, even the away ones last season - so I'm sure he was buzzing after playing, and he'll be pleased with himself," added Ikeme.
Flatt was soon yelling at his defence and despite his tender years, appears to have bags of confidence.
"He opens his mouth which is a big part of the game and he's comfortable around the lads which is important as well," said Ikeme.
"It was good for him to play and get an understanding of what first-team football is about and what it's like playing with the lads.
"It put a bit of added pressure on him even though it was only a friendly, but it's good to have that pressure situation to make him improve.
"The clean sheet in his 45 minutes will give him a lot of confidence and he smashed through Richard Stearman and came for a lot of crosses, so he'll be happy with what he did and he deserved his chance too."
