Ware had been in remission following treatment for a brain tumour last year but his health deteriorated over the weekend and he passed away on Tuesday night.

He leaves behind a widow, Tracey, and daughters Laura and Amy.

Brindley said: "I played with Paul for about a year and a half and he was such a lovely bloke as well as being a top player.

"People often say 'why do things like this happen to the good ones', and that is definitely true in Paul's case.

"We were very lucky to get him to Hednesford because we were a non-league club and he played most of his career in the Football League."

The Cheshire-born midfielder spent two seasons with the Pitmen from 1997 to 1999 with the club enjoying memorable success in the FA Cup under John Baldwin. He had another brief spell at Keys Park in 2002.

Ware helped the club to seventh place in the Conference in 1998 and played in the FA Cup first-round wins at Hull in 1997 and Barnet in 1998.
