Jerry Mongan missed a place in the national finals of the ABA Schoolboys competition after being overpowered in the first round of his last four fight.

The referee intervened after handing a third standing count to Mongan, who was out-muscled by southpaw John Johnstone, from Brodsworth ABC in Doncaster.

They clashed at the Havercroft Leisure Centre in Ryhill, West Yorkshire at 50kg in Class One, for boxers born in 2000, with Mongan fresh yesterday after a series of byes.

The Droitwich-based traveller, who is home schooled, was competing in this year's tournament for the first time, representing Priory Park ABC in Dudley.

The usually-durable Mongan found himself answering a count when he was dazed by a left hook, then again when coming onto the receiving end of a stiff, straight left.

A third left hand connecting was enough for the referee to count and then wave away Mongan, to end the contest and shatter his dreams of becoming a national champion.

However, the 12-year-old still has another two years to achieve his ambitions in the Schoolboys as he goes up to Classes Two and Three from the most junior category.
