Nick Wellecomme chance for Rangers

Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes today cast doubt on a potential return to Marston Road for free agent striker Nick Wellecomme.

But the Rangers boss has expressed an interest in utility man Jay Denny who, along with Wellecomme, has been released by Hednesford.

The former United States under-20 international is back in his homeland getting married and will not return to England until the end of the month.

Wellecomme previously was at Rangers from March 2008 to December 2010 and played under Clowes when he was boss at Newcastle Town.

However, the Rangers chief has warned won't tolerate the 28-year-old playing Sunday League football alongside his club duties.

Clowes said: "Nick, the last I heard, was also playing Sunday football and I can't warrant that. If he was going to finish, I would want to speak to him.

"Whether he would want to speak to me, I don't know, but I have a good relationship with him from our time at Newcastle Town.

"That's the situation with him and Jay is a player who can play in three or four positions and has done very well whenever I have watched him.

"Of course, I would be interested in him but, having said that, I imagine a few clubs will."

Clowes has also held talks with the likes of Michael Carr, Ryan Brown, Ryan Dicker, Rob Stevenson and goalkeepers Danny Read and Adam Alcock.

He's been left confident the bulk of last season's playing squad will stay at Marston Road and Clowes is also making headway with fresh signings.

He said: "My main targets within the squad have agreed with me that they want to stay and the figure that we can afford to keep them.

"I am pleased, so far, I think I have been able to attract a better class of player then I was able to last year, because I was late taking the job.

"I think there's people who would like to come to Stafford if I can get the financial side right."
