Stafford Rangers boss Greg Clowes today hinted he could quit if the club do not make significant strides under his leadership next season.

Rangers are set to finish in the bottom half of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League ahead of Saturday's curtain call at Frickley Athletic.

Clowes came into the club with a three-year plan last summer and his first campaign has been about bringing a period of stability to Marston Road.

However, the manager has sat on the fence on whether his side will able to challenge for a place back in the Blue Square North next season.

Much will depend on the club's budget for the campaign, which will be decided between Clowes and the board of directors in a couple of weeks.

But the Rangers boss today revealed that, whatever happens, he could leave if the club don't kick on over the next 12 months.

He said: "Everyone is strving to improve and we are no different, I am very determined to make sure that we progress.

"Next season is where I will be judged and, if we are not improving, people are going to be saying so.

"If, at that point, we are in the same situation as we are in now, then I am not the right man for the job, simple as."

Clowes also admitted some of the current playing squad will have to let go if there is to be a significant improvement.

He said: "There's going to be changes at every club, whether you finish top or bottom of the league.

"There's a lot of players at this club we have given opportunities and have shown a lot of loyalty to.

"For some of them, it's not worked out and that is clear, but others have shown us that they can handle this league.

"We have got to make sure that we keep hold of those and, as for the others, you will know that they are not there.

"We have got some players that can move us on, there's no doubt about that, but we haven't got enough of them."
