Stafford Rangers will reunite the famous team from the club's first-ever trip to Wembley for their last home game of the season.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Rangers lifting the FA Trophy for the first time, players from that run will return to Marston Road.

Arguably the greatest side the club has ever produced will be paraded on the pitch in front of the home fans before Saturday's game with Buxton.

They will then congregate in the club-house after the match with the current team and management, where they will meet and greet supporters.

In 1971-72, Rangers romped to the Northern Premier League title on route to the trophy final, where they beat Barnet 3-0 on 15 April 1972.

Ray Williams scored two goals that day for what is still a club-record 48 goal season haul, with Mike Cullerton also on the score-sheet.

Cullerton will be on hand as will Graham Chadwick, George Machin, Stuart Chapman, Joe Clayton, Jim Sargeant, Keith Mottershead and Gerry Jones.

Their title charge could have got them elected to the Football League, as they were playing in what was then the highest level of non-league football.

Another trophy win followed in 1979 and they were founder members of the Blue Square Premier, first called the Alliance Premier League.

And current Rangers manager Greg Clowes admitted their legacy has never been forgotten in somewhat leaner times for the club.

He said: "What those players achieved, at that time, was remarkable and people remember that, even though the club is in a different state.

"You can't take history away from this club and I still feel that Stafford Rangers are sleeping giants.

"It's nice to be able to take a look back at that time."
