Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes believes a battle of the club's goalkeepers could be key to his side pulling away from trouble.

Despite a 12 point cushion from the relegation places, Clowes insists that the drop from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League is possible.

The Rangers boss was livid after Saturday's 3-1 defeat at Bradford Park Avenue, their fourth defeat in five games.

His current custodian, Adam Alcock, could do little to hold the hosts back but had been on-form since coming in for Danny Read.

With Read sitting it out through family commitments, Alcock came in for only his second start of the season at Mickleover Sports.

The team lost 1-0 but Alcock impressed and he saved a penalty against Northwich, only to concede the rebound.

Read continues to look on from the bench and Clowes admits his deposed No 1 faces a test to get the goalkeeper's jersey back.

He said: "If Adam keeps that sort of form up, Danny won't get a sniff. If somebody comes in to the team well, they hold their position down.

"Adam had to wait for his chance, the first time around, then Danny got his place back when Adam dislocated his finger at Burscough.

"Adam has warranted his starts, the choice of him was right. Both of them this season, when they have been called upon, have done very well.

"There's quite a few clubs in this division who don't even have a back-up goalkeeper and I have two slugging it out to be No 1.

"These are the two I have had, at any given point and that has been highlighted with the selection of Adam, at the moment."
