Rangers target move for Ben Deegan
Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes today made former FC United of Manchester striker Ben Deegan his latest transfer target.
Stafford Rangers manager Greg Clowes today made former FC United of Manchester striker Ben Deegan his latest transfer target.
Deegan was released by United last week and joined New Mills, who play in the league below Rangers, on a short-term deal.
But Clowes is still keeping tabs on the 23-year-old and hopes to entice him back into the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.
The Rangers boss brought Chris Morris to Marston Road last week but was turned down by two other strikers, Spencer Weir-Daley and Mark Danks.
And Clowes admits he's still searching for the big target man they have been missing since Chris Budrys defected to Northwich in October.
He said: "I have made Ben aware that we will be very interested to speak to him and I will be monitoring that situation closely over the next few weeks.
"He's similar to Budrys, he's a big strong lad who can occupy two centre-halves when playing up front. He will score more goals, too."
Clowes can also call upon Alan Nagington again as another striking option, with the 27-year-old back in training after being away on his honeymoon.
Morris was handed his debut alongside Neville Thompson in Saturday's 1-0 win over Marine, having played together in the youth set-up at Shrewsbury.
It was Morris who set up the goal for Thompson and the manager hopes the two can bring the best out of each other.
He said: "I have got three strikers on the books now but we will rotate, depending on who we are playing against.
"Chris is very direct, he's got lots of energy and pace and he will shoot, I think we have lacked that a lot this season.
"Him and Neville know each other well from their younger times together and that helps. You can tell, they played off each other well on Saturday.
"Neville hasn't been anywhere near what he can do this year and I have told him that, hopefully this goal can bring him some confidence.
"He's a very good player and maybe, now he knows I have been trying to bring centre-forwards in, the penny has dropped with him.
"His last two games for Stafford Rangers have arguably been his best."
