Harriers boss expects fight for places
Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr believes competition for places at Aggborough will be fierce this season after watching side beat Shrewsbury in a friendly.
Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr believes competition for places at Aggborough will be fierce this season after watching side beat Shrewsbury in a friendly.
Harriers saw off the League Two promotion-chasers 2-1 last night, Jamille Matt netting the winner with four minutes to go at Aggborough.
The home side had led through Lee Vaughan's first-half penalty, given for Carl Regan's crude push on David Hankin, before Lionel Ainsworth got the Shrews' equaliser with 16 minutes to go.
Matt entered the fray for the second-half as boss Burr rang the changes to give his players game time and, again, the striker scored on home soil after his goal in the 3-2 defeat to Albion last week.
The 21-year-old big frontman is one of six strikers on the club's books, who form the attacking hub in Harriers' 22 contracted players for next season.
And, after alternating his team throughout every pre-season game so far, Burr believes he has a wealth of talent at his disposal.
He said: "I thought the football we played was very good last night. It was a good test because this was more what it is going to be like for us this season in terms of opposition.
"Some performances were excellent and, in the first-half, I thought we played particularly well.
"In the second-half we obviously made changes but it was nice to see the lads who were going on were pushing and not reading anything into the first-half side, because we have still got a long way to go yet.
"It makes my job harder but, in that respect, we know we are getting a squad together that is looking quite strong at the moment."
