Kidderminster Harriers have named popular left-back Mike Williams as their new captain for the upcoming Blue Square Premier season.

The 24-year-old replaces Keith Briggs, who left Aggborough this summer to play for a club nearer to his home in Glossop and signed for league rivals Fleetwood.

Williams has been a permanent fixture for Harriers since coming to the club as a free agent from Wrexham a year ago and brother Marc, a striker, has followed him from the Racecourse Ground.

Both started in the 3-1 pre-season friendly win at Evo-Stik Premier League side Northwich on Saturday, with Marc grabbing the second goal either side of strikes from Steve Guinan and Nick Wright.

But it's Mike who will lead the side this season and the former Wales under-21 international is delighted with the call.

He said: "When I first came back for pre-season I didn't expect it but, once the idea was put out there, I told the gaffer I wanted it and it is a compliment that he's chosen me.

"We have a lot of lads who have come from clubs where they were skipper so I am happy to be leading the lads out for the new season.

"We have an experienced team here and, even though I will be wearing the armband, we do have a lot of natural leaders.

"I have to make sure I stay in the team with my performances but also lead by example.

"This is a new opportunity for me and I'm going to grasp it with both hands."
