Stafford Rangers top scorer Ben Mills will play the waiting game before sorting out his future - but wants to be convinced there is still ambition at the club.

Like the rest of last season's squad, Mills' Rangers career is up in the air after relegation from the Blue Square North, meaning a drop into non-league football's third tier next season.

The six-goal striker was also one of only two players on contract for the last campaign, along with captain Craig McAughtrie.

Mills has yet to discuss his future with manager Matt Elliott but, at the very least, a drop in pay is on the cards for the 22-year-old, who hasn't decided what he wants to do next season.

At this stage, the hard-working forward doesn't even know if he is still wanted at Rangers but will not be looking elsewhere until he finds out.

He said: "It's important that things are right at the club, behind the scenes as well, and I want to play in a team that's going to be successful.

"I don't know if I fit into their plans and no-one can say anything until we have had that conversation, from there I will know whether I need to look for another club or if I am staying as a Rangers player.

"It's the right thing to do to speak to Stafford before I try to open any doors and speak to anyone on that note, out of courtesy.

"If people want you and they are serious about it, whether it's now or the middle of June, they are still going to want you, from a players point of view.

"I have spoken to a few of the lads and they don't know what is going on yet, but quite a few of them feel that they owe the club."

Mills first came to Rangers two years ago but left Marston Road to join Alfreton for seven months in 2009-10, only to be used sparingly.

However, his experiences with the now-Blue Square Premier outfit hasn't dented his ambitions to join a club at the highest level possible.

He said: "It's a balance, do you and play every week in a weaker side or do you look around and play in a team that are really strong, but you are not going to play as much?

"You want to be playing but you want to be playing for the right reasons, because you are pressing on."
