Luke Young has delivered a brutal assessment of Villa's campaign as a "wasted season" and claiming that the club is currently in a "bit of a mess."

Villa secured a point against Wigan at the weekend which confirmed their Premier League status for another season, barring a set of freakish results.

But that was of little consolation to the experienced full-back who revealed his frustrations at a stop-start campaign which has seen four different managers in charge of team affairs.

The 31-year-old also urged owner Randy Lerner and chief executive Paul Faulkner to make a swift decision on who will be taking the club forward in the summer as Gerard Houllier continues his recovery from recent health problems.

Young said: "It is a bit of a mess. We need to know what we are doing, who is going to take the club forward and who is going to be making the decisions on which players stay and go.

"We need to know who is going to be in charge. Let's be honest, no-one knows what is happening.

"We feel we have had a season where we are meant to be moving on and basically we have wasted a year. We're no further down the line than we were before.

"I'd hope that a decision is made quickly. It's very unsettling with Gerard's situation.

"We knew that with a few games to go that the current situation was only going to be short-term."
