Stafford Rangers manager Matt Elliott believes the team's young guns could come of age in the fight against relegation from the Blue Square North.

Saturday's vital win over Blyth Spartans saw a winner from striker Ben Mills, his third goal in six games, which matched his league total for the rest of the season.

The 21-year-old, who turns 22 on March 29, has struggled in front of goal after returning to the club last summer following a spell at Alfreton.

But Elliott believes the former Leek forward is starting to find his feet again, as the likes of 19-year-old Alex Forde and 21-year-old Niall Maguire start to pin down places in the team.

The Rangers boss has been left with little option but to turn to the club's young players for their survival fight but, especially in the case of Mills, is hoping it will pay dividends.

He said: "Ben's commitment and enthusiasm has never been in doubt, he's as good a lad as you could wish to meet and honest as the day is long.

"Thankfully, lately, he has put in a few performances and, even more thankfully, has scored some goals.

"Like any player, of any age or experience, confidence is a part of it. He's not got the strike rate he would like this season but, lately, he's finding the back of the net and long may it continue.

"Obviously, goals are vital to any team in any situation and the one Ben got on Saturday was good enough to win any game.

"He's still young but his attitude is spot on, as has been the case with all of the lads."

Forde also excelled in Saturday's win after returning from a three-match suspension in a new role to boot, as an anchorman shoring up between defence and midfield.

In the middle of the park, Maguire has started seven out of the last eight games since Elliott gave him his first 90 minutes against Nuneaton.

And the manager insists there will continue to be opportunities for those who take their chance when it comes.

He said: "I thought Alex was vital to us achieving the result, he just wants to be involved and wants to do his bit. He's one of a number of players who have stuck at it all season and been there, week in and week out.

"Look at Niall Maguire, he always acquitted himself in training, as did Alex, and they have slightly unfortunate that, right from the start of the season, there has been the pressure of being in the relegation zone, which is not an ideal time to be introducing new blood.

"I think it's just a matter of them getting a few games and getting that self belief."
