Levi Reid today issued an apology on behalf of Stafford Rangers players to supporters after their relegation fears worsened with a 5-0 home drubbing against Hyde.
Rangers were four goals down by half-time in Saturday's horror show at Marston Road, against the team directly above them and the safety line in the Blue Square North.
Two goals in the opening nine minutes opened the floodgates, as a crestfallen home crowd looked on in dismay at the heaviest defeat of the season, which leaves them six points from safety.
They do have two games in hand on Saturday's visitors and one of those is at home to play-off chasing Boston United tomorrow night, with Blyth Spartans to follow at Marston Road on Saturday.
And midfielder Reid insists the players are desperate to right the wrongs of Hyde as soon as possible, after admitting he understands the fans' frustration at such a tame capitulation on Saturday.
He said: "No one wants to go out and put on a performance like that and there's no one more disappointed than the lads.
"I can understand the supporters' disappointment and they are paying our wages, but the last thing we want is them to turn on us.
"Anybody who understands football will know things like this happen and as players all we can do is try and put it right.
"We were poor on Saturday and we know that, but all we can now is try and bounce back tomorrow night."
