Stafford Rangers have been stunned by the resignation of manager Tim Flowers on the day of their derby game with AFC Telford after just nine games in charge.

Assistant boss Matt Elliott, the former Leicester and Scotland defender, is in caretaker charge for the home game against their local rivals at Marston Road tonight, where Rangers go into play six points from safety in the Blue Square North.

Former Wolves and England goalkeeper Flowers only won once as boss, a Staffordshire Senior Cup tie at Market Drayton Town, and collected just two points from eight Blue Square North matches.

The 43-year-old informed the club of his decision in a telephone call to chairman Mike Hughes late yesterday afternoon, with Elliott placed in temporary charge today.

A club statement said: "Mr Flowers stated that he was not enjoying the job and that he did not want to continue doing something he did not enjoy.

"For the time being Matt Elliott will be in charge of team affairs, including tonight's game against AFC Telford.

"The board will be meeting later this week to discuss the club's situation."
