Stafford Rangers manager Tim Flowers has called off his chase of Michael Carr after the midfielder decided to stay at Nantwich.

Flowers put in a seven-day approach for the former England C international, who has seven caps for his country, but failed to agree personal terms with the player.

Carr is now set to accept a revised deal to stay in the Northern Premier League with the Dabbers, who are co-managed by former Rangers midfielder and caretaker boss Kevin Street.

But it's a statement of intent from Flowers of the type of player he is looking to attract to Marston Road, with Carr highly-rated in non-league circles and in the full-time game until last year, when he was released by Kidderminster Harriers.

However, the 26-year-old would have faced a commute from Crewe to training and games so with, Nantwich based closer to home, has decided to stay put.

And the search goes on for Flowers as he tries to rebuild a struggling side at Rangers, with Liam McDonald and Martyn Naylor from Barwell and AFC Telford respectively his only permanent additions to the team so far.

The Rangers boss was deadly serious in his pursuit of Carr but, with the deal dead, does not expect to land his top transfer target.

He said: "It's a non-starter unfortunately, we have probably drawn a bit of a line under that now.

"I just don't think we can get to what he needs financially and that's basically it, end of story really.

"Michael is a player who I definitely would have loved to have brought in, he's someone who play at Blue Square North level with his eyes shut.

"He seems a really good lad, it's a shame but I wish him well and we now move on to other targets."
