Harriers boss targets Crawley upset
Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr has warned big-spending Crawley their money counts for nothing as the teams prepare to meet in the Blue Square Premier.
Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr has warned big-spending Crawley their money counts for nothing as the teams prepare to meetin the Blue Square Premier.
Burr takes his side to the Broadfield Stadium to face 'the Manchester City of non-league football' tomorrow, whose record spend over the summer has seen them march to the top of the table.
Their deadline day capture of Richard Brodie for £300,000 smashed the league's transfer record, while strike partner Matt Tubbs was also a £70,000 capture for boss Steve Evans.
It's the sort of firepower other managers at their level can only dream of including Burr, who has yet to pay a transfer fee in completing revamping his side since taking over in January.
But Harriers were going great guns, unbeaten in six before crashing 2-0 at Bath City on Tuesday night, while Crawley were sweeping aside Tamworth 3-1.
However, Burr's men have proved away from home this season that they can defy the odds through sheer willpower, right from the opening day when they won 2-1 at last season's play-off finalists York.
And the manager is looking for his players to spring another shock against their moneybags hosts.
He said: "We go there trying to get ourselves back on track and we know we are going to be in for a very tough game tomorrow, that's for sure.
"Crawley are flying high and have brought in some very good players, who really could be playing for teams at a higher level.
"They splashed out around £300,000 on a centre forward, that's about the total of our wage bill for the season!
"But you can have all the money you like, what it doesn't buy you is commitment, effort and that passion to succeed - and I know that our lads have got that in abundance.
"Their desire to do well for this football club have been very pleasing."
