Stafford Rangers' new signing Darren Wrack has been hailed for making all the difference on his debut in Saturday's win over Gainsborough Trinity.

The former Walsall midfielder made his return to the West Midlands on non-contract terms for the Blue Square North league game, after his release from Kettering.

A move to Marston Road is the 34-year-old's first foray into the part-time game after 16 years as a professional, a decade of that spent with the Saddlers between 1998 and 2008.

His arrival represents somewhat of a coup for Rangers, with manager Chris Brindley pitching him straight in for 90 minutes of the 3-1 success, the team's first win in four games.

And Levi Reid, another ex-pro who played alongside Wrack in the middle of the park on Saturday, believes their new arrival still has star quality.

He said: "Darren made the difference on Saturday, he's a good player and an experienced head to have in there. He's a good talker as well, he keeps it simple and organises a lot of the players around him.

"I prefer playing in the middle and it helps a little bit more having a player like him in there with you. He reads the game well and that is what he can bring to the team.

"We have got a lot of young lads at the club and having 'Wracky' around is someone for them to look up to."

Wrack may have been pulling the strings but it was striker Ben Mills who was the Man of the Match on Saturday, scoring the second goal from 20-yards after Reid set him up.

Chris Sterling netted the other two goals, as Gainsborough manager Brian Little made the short journey back to his Stafford home with the team well beaten.

Reid believes Little's men won't be the first to struggle to contain Mills as he comes back to form after a hip injury.

The midfielder said: "Ben did well, he's getting his fitness back and the more games he plays the better performances the team will get from him."
