Battling Wolves suffered last minute heartbreak as they crashed to their first defeat of the season at Fulham.

The visitors looked like hanging on in a poisonous atmosphere at Craven Cottage, where the locals harangued Mick McCarthy's men for perceived rough house tactics.

But Moussa Dembele's 90th minute free-kick – after Christophe Berra was dismissed for two bookable offences – won it for Fulham.

Dembele had earlier equalised Jelle Van Damme's 10th minute opener but Fulham's victory was marred by a serious ankle injury to Bobby Zamora – who was stretchered off in the first-half.

Michael Mancienne replaced David Jones, who dropped to the bench, for his first start since re-signing on loan from Chelsea last month.

And Wolves were instantly under pressure but Clint Dempsey's dive in the box went unpunished, before Jody Craddock was lucky not to concede a penalty after tripping Simon Davies.

But the visitors stunned Craven Cottage after 10 minutes in controversial style.

The hosts were screaming for a free-kick after Kevin Doyle wrestled with Brede Hangeland on the right but their cries went unanswered.

It allowed Doyle to turn and send over a teasing cross which evaded Sylvan Ebanks-Blake but found the onrushing van Damme to fire home at the far post.

The goal came against the run of play and, undaunted, Fulham continued to press with Zamora a constant threat – before he was stretchered off with a serious ankle injury on 29 minutes.

The England striker crumpled under Karl Henry's challenge – where the Wolves captain won the ball – but in the tangle Zamora's right leg buckled.

Former Albion star Zoltan Gera replaced the stricken striker and, understandably, the Cottagers' momentum was hit.

Danny Murphy smashed a free-kick over, before John Pantsil was booked for tripping Doyle as the striker threatened to go clean through just before the break.

The atmosphere then turned nasty as the hosts become increasingly frustrated, with Henry coming in for special attention from both the crowd and Fulham's players.

Steven Fletcher replaced van Damme at the break, but Wolves were pegged back after 49 minutes when former Birmingham target Dembele latched onto a loose ball and steered it in into the corner.

It breathed new life into the Cottagers and Gera acrobatically volleyed over.

Wolves survived another penalty scare when Davies tangled with goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann, before Chris Baird blocked Doyle's goal-bound header in a rare Wolves chance.

Fulham had the edge but the game remained open and goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer tipped Matt Jarvis' cross over on 70 minutes.

But, just as Wolves looked on course for a deserved point, Berra was dismissed for a second booking in injury time and Dembele dispatched a 25-yard free-kick into the bottom corner.
