Wolves today handed flying winger Matt Jarvis a five-year contract to reward his sparkling Premier League form.

The 24-year-old still had two years on his existing deal - signed in February 2009 - and the new agreement ties him to Molineux until 2015.

The new deal equals the longest ever handed to a Wolves player, matching that of Wayne Hennessey in the summer and Matt Murray, Robbie Keane and Joleon Lescott in the past.

Negotiations have been ongoing for some time and the news is not a kneejerk reaction to the former Gillingham man being in the frame for the recent England Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Jarvis, who is due to make his 150th League start of his career at Fulham tomorrow, has had a sizzling start to the season and caught the eye of England boss Fabio Capello in the 1-1 draw at Everton.

And Wolves believe there is more improvement to come from the wideman, who has operated on both flanks this season.

"There was a lot of speculation linking him to a possible England call-up for the recent qualifiers which shows the progress he's been making," said chief executive Jez Moxey.

"And we're confident he still has more improvement to come."

Boss Mick McCarthy said: "He's just got better and better, so much so that there was the suggestion of an England call-up last month.

"He always wants to work hard and improve and we're looking forward to him doing that with Wolves."

Jarvis paid tribute to the club, fans and McCarthy, saying: "If you're doing well here your contract situation does get reviewed which is great for the players.

"It's a good move on the club's behalf as it helps the squad to stay together.

"The club have been fantastic and the fans have got right behind me.

"The gaffer and the backroom staff have all helped me develop my game, particularly with extra bits before and after training."

The winger, who joined Wolves for £600,000 from the Gills in June 2007, overcame niggling injuries which plagued his first 18 months at the club to become one of Wolves' most consistent players, and is now just three short of his century at Molineux.

Moxey added: "We've been talking to Matt and his representative for a long period of time.

"He was very keen to commit to us and we were very keen to commit to him.

"Matt is a highly talented player who fits in with our policy of developing good young players and aiming to keep them at Molineux.

"He started 30 games in the Premier League last season and did very well.

"He had less than two years remaining on his contract, and it was the right time to do something."

The winger, who joined Wolves for a bargain £600,000 from the Gills in June 2007, has overcome niggling injuries which plagued his first 18 months at the club to become one of Wolves' most consistent players since recovering from a hamstring injury in November 2008, and is now just three short of his century at Molineux.
