Birmingham new-boy Alexander Hleb has claimed he turned down Tottenham and Liverpool in favour of a move to St Andrew's.

The Belarus international made the deadline-day loan switch from Barcelona to Blues, becoming one of three new faces in Alex McLeish's squad.

And the 29-year-old claims he rejected Spurs, Liverpool and Portuguese giants Benfica in favour of a move to the Midlands.

Hleb told the media in his homeland: "There were many offers - Liverpool, Tottenham, Benfica.

"But it was necessary to carefully consider all the options. With some we were unable to agree terms.

"Birmingham City apparently wanted me more than anyone else, so they were my preference."

Hleb joined Chilean World Cup star Jean Beausejour, who moved from Club America for around £3.3million, and Spartak Moscow captain Martin Jiranek, who cost around £400,000 in the arrivals lounge.

Beausejour penned a three-year contract and Jiranek has signed for one year.
