Stafford Rangers assistant boss Steve Wynn believes Alfreton are streets ahead of any other team in the Blue Square North after defeat at the Impact Arena.

Rangers went down 2-0 to the league leaders in the Bank Holiday game yesterday, bringing a four-match unbeaten run to an end.

Alfreton have come flying out of the blocks so far this season, with goals from Paul Clayton and Liam Hearn maintaining a 100 per cent record after six games.

A selection of Blue Square North big guns already trail in their wake, with Wynn believing the promotion chasers have what it takes to win the title this season.

He said: "I will go on record to say that in the five years I have been involved in the Blue Square North, Alfreton are one of the best teams I have seen.

"They are big, strong, powerful, well-drilled, relentless, they keep coming at you and have got a lot of flair in the areas where you want it.

"I was very, very impressed by them."

For all Alfreton's superiority, it took them until the 89th minute to properly see off Rangers, through a penalty from Hearn given for Alex Forde's challenge on Anthony Wilson.

Wynn has revealed that Forde was adamant he didn't make contact after the game.

The Rangers No 2 said: "Alex is convinced he didn't touch him and the lad wouldn't say that if he had, because the deed is already done.

"But, I must admit, my first reaction is that it was a penalty."
