Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr has saluted rising star Callum Gittings after his goal helped stun hot favourites York with a win on the opening day.

Harriers made the long trip to last season's Blue Square Premier play-off finalists and silenced KitKat Crescent by dominating the home side, going on to win 2-1 against their much-fancied hosts.

It was a day to remember for Gittings who scored on his debut, in what has been a fairytale rise to prominence this summer for the 24-year-old.

The wide man came to Aggborough on trial from part-timers Alvechurch in the summer desperate for a chance in the full-time game, turning pro when Harriers handed him a one-year deal.

A goal in the opening game went some way to justifying boss Burr's decision to sign him up, in what the manager's first opening day in charge of the club and few will go better.

The Harriers chief was gushing with praise for his impressive debutant and the team after the game.

He said: "There is more to football than just attacking and defensively I thought we were solid.

"Our goalkeeper Danny Lewis pulled off some great saves when he was called upon and the back-four stayed solid, but as a team you saw the work-rate from the players and every one of them worked their socks off.

"I must save some special praise for Callum considering this time last year the lad was playing at Alvechurch, the performance he's put in was fantastic.

"I can't fault anybody and that's what it has to be this season - we've got no lads who think they're better than they are here and it was nice to send the supporters home happy."
