Stafford Rangers have appointed long-serving board member Mike Hughes as their permanent chairman - while their on-field defensive problems loomed larger.

Hughes, long regarded as part of the furniture at Marston Road, has now been confirmed as Jon Downing's successor, after taking on the role in an acting capacity after Downing retired at the end of last season.

But on the field Rangers still have a defensive headache ahead of Saturday's Blue Square North opener at Boston United, with the '50-50' fitness chance that was given to Jermaine Johnson tilting firmly against him today.

Johnson was meant to fill in at centre-back for Craig McAughtrie, who is suspended for the Boston trip and next Tuesday's first home game against Solihull Moors.

But last season's loan star is struggling with a hamstring injury, pulling up in his first game back against Hednesford, and has confirmed himself today that he has little chance of making either game.

Kidderminster Harriers defender Gavin Caines may provide an alternative, after playing the last two friendly games, who is available for transfer and not wanted by his club.

Provided Rangers manager Chris Brindley can work something out with his good friend and Harriers counterpart Steve Burr, Caines could come in on a month's loan to fill the void.

But Johnson is pretty much out of the equation, with the former Chelsea youngster admitting the visit of Guiseley a week on Saturday is a more realistic target.

He said: "I am trying my hardest to get fit but it's not looking good, it's probably going to be another week or two before I am back. I would say the game at Guiseley is more likely for me, it's a blow and very frustrating.

"But you can't rush these things."
