Wolves' club-record signing Steven Fletcher has reassured fans the players will be ready for the big kick-off.

Mick McCarthy's side go to Hearts tonight having produced arguably their worst performance of the summer as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat at Leeds on Saturday.

It was their second successive reverse to Championship opposition after going down 2-1 at Reading three days earlier.

Fletcher at least offered a highlight as Wolves' outstanding player at Elland Road.

And the former Burnley hitman believes concerned supporters have to look at the bigger picture.

"Results don't matter - it's pre-season and we just want to get fit," said the Scotland international.

"You want to test yourself before the season starts and we did that.

"We've got a great fitness coach who's done well with all the boys and I feel sharp.

"Good results would be nice but all the boys are getting a run-out.

"We did that on Saturday and we've got a game tonight against Hearts to look forward to as well."

As a former striker with Hearts' arch rivals Hibernian, Fletcher admits he could be in for a rough time when he returns to Scotland's capital.

"It will be good to get back home to Edinburgh but I don't know if I'll get a good reception! It could be spicy!" he added.

With Stephen Hunt and Steven Mouyokolo still to play in the first team after being injured, it's been left to Fletcher, Jelle van Damme and Adlene Guedioura to carry the flag for the new signings last weekend.

Although van Damme was given a tough time on Saturday by winger Max Gradel, Fletcher believes Wolves have recruited well.

"All the new signings have done well when they've played," he said.

"I knew the boys were part of a quality team before I came in and I knew what their strengths were.

"We've got some great talent so I'm looking forward to getting the season started."

Wolves have a 28-man squad at the moment but Fletcher believes that will be an advantage so the team can be freshened up, after admitting Burnley's smaller numbers cost them dear last term.

"It's a bigger squad than Burnley's because they only had a small squad and it was quite hard for us," he said.

"But here the gaffer has a lot of options that will help us.

"Having a decent-sized squad helped Wolves last season and hopefully it will again."

Fletcher again insisted his hefty price tag didn't affect him, adding: "No, it was the same at Burnley - I took that in my stride so I can do it again.

"I've got a good family around me and they won't allow me to get big-headed."
