Kidderminster Harriers have been left stunned by the departure of winger David McDermott who has walked out on the club to join York.

The wide man has gone to KitKat Crescent on trial as he was at Aggborough, but offered the chance to prove his fitness after an injury-plagued season in 2009/10.

McDermott had returned to Harriers for the start of pre-season training and played the first-half of Saturday's 3-0 friendly defeat at home to Albion, but will now leave the Midlands in the hope of securing a deal at York.

It takes the 22-year-old out of his comfort zone after starting his career at Walsall and going on loan to Halesowen twice, the latter being while at Harriers last season, as well as taking him away from his home base of Stourbridge.

And all York have brought to the table so far is the chance of a fresh start, which has made his decision to leave all the more puzzling to Harriers manager Steve Burr.

He said: "Since last season David has hardly played any football, through no fault of his own, so it was obviously the most we as a club could offer him – the chance to come back and show us what he could do.

"But he is a free agent and it is his right to decide where he wants to try and earn a contract.

"As far as I know he has not been offered anything concrete by York so we're disappointed to see him go - especially as we offered him the same chance straight after the end of the season - but we wish him good luck."
