Harriers dismiss Sean Newton talk
Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr has denied sounding out AFC Telford for a potential swoop of their England C left-back Sean Newton.
Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr has denied sounding out AFC Telford for a potential swoop of their England C left-back Sean Newton.
Sources had indicated that the question had been asked of the Bucks about the 21-year-old, who the Harriers boss knows from his time as Paul Fairclough's assistant to the national side.
Although the Aggborough chief is a fan of Newton and needs a left-back after Lee Baker signed for Newport, Burr is not making the spot a priority just yet.
He said: "Sean's a quality player but there hasn't been contact from us. He's a left-back and that is an area we need to strengthen, but really we are hanging fire and seeing what becomes available over the next month or so.
"We have a few targets for that spot but I am not naming names, as obviously it alerts other clubs.
"Hopefully, as we get closer to the season, there will be a bit more money in our budget on that score."
Burr has also drawn a blank in moving on transfer-listed duo Gavin Caines and Robbie Matthews, with both still on the payroll at Aggborough.
Caines is entitled to another year's contract after a clause in his deal was triggered by the amount of games played last season, while Matthews also has another season left on his terms.
Both are reasonably high earners, with the manager eager to clear the decks and make room on the wage bill for further signings.
He said: "I have had no phone calls about Gavin, but I have had a couple of enquiries about Robbie Matthews, although I wouldn't like to say who exactly were interested.
"I will tell you that it's a couple clubs from lower divisions and one in our league, but it was just a tentative enquiry really."
