Freed Wolves defender George Friend has signed for Championship side Doncaster in a two-year deal.

The versatile 22-year-old, who cost Wolves an initial £350,000 on transfer deadline day in September 2008, boosts Rovers' left-sided options after the departures of Gareth Roberts to Derby County and Sean McDaid to Carlisle.

Friend will also be hoping to bolster Wolverhampton-born Sean O'Driscoll's side's position from their 12th placed finish last season, after they ended up 14th in 2008/09.

And the Devon-born defender will be making an early return to his roots when he joins the south Yorkshire side for their pre-season preparations in the Joma South West Challenge Cup.

Friend joined Wolves on transfer deadline day from Exeter in September 2008.

But in two seasons he made just eight appearances and last term spent time on loan with Scunthorpe, Southend, Millwall and with his former club Exeter.

His signing for Rovers means all three players released from Wolves last month have now joined new clubs.

Academy graduates Daniel Jones and Mark Little have signed three-year contracts with relegated Championship clubs Sheffield Wednesday and Peterborough respectively.

That means the pair could well face each other in League One fixtures next season.
