Peter Bonetti has backed under-fire England goalkeeper Robert Green to recover from his World Cup nightmare.

The former Chelsea star – who won seven England caps – expects the West Ham man to keep his place for the second Group C game against Algeria on Friday.

Green has been slammed for allowing Clint Dempsey to score in the 1-1 draw against the United States on Saturday.

Bonetti made his own high profile error in the 1970 World Cup quarter-final against West Germany – allowing Franz Beckenbauer to score as England squandered a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2.

And the 68-year-old says Green will get a chance of redemption.

Bonetti, who lives in Streetly, said: "Fabio Capello is a shrewd man and a good professional. He did the right thing by keeping Green on the field for the second half - substituting him would have crushed his self-confidence - and I'm pretty sure he will give him another chance.

"He's a great professional and the fact is he deserved to start the game. He proved just how much character he has by pulling off that fantastic save in the second-half.

"That took real bottle."

Bonetti knows exactly how Green is feeling, after his blunder cost England a semi final spot 40 years ago.

He said: "Green will be feeling desperately low about himself but, hopefully, he will also have a good support structure around him.

"I was fortunate to have just that in 1970. When we came in after being beaten 3-2 by the Germans, the dressing room was like a morgue."
