Nick Wellecomme on Rangers exit
Nick Wellecomme believes he will always owe a debt to Stafford Rangers after saying his goodbyes to the club.
Nick Wellecomme believes he will always owe a debt to Stafford Rangers after saying his goodbyes to the club.
The captain joined big-spending Blue Square North rivals Corby this week, bringing to an end over two years at Marston Road after being plucked from Midland Combination outfit Brocton in March 2008.
Wellecomme has not signed a deal at the Rockingham Triangle, only non-contract forms, at the player's own request in case the move didn't work out.
It still took a 'double-your-money' offer for the club's longest serving player to leave Rangers, the sort of offer with which Corby have been snaring players from league rivals all summer.
But Wellecomme insists it's simply ambition that has lured him away, after fighting a relegation battle over the last two seasons, with his new club the increasing favourites for promotion next season.
The 25-year-old also felt it was simply his time to seek pastures new, but not without acknowledging the part Rangers and manager Chris Brindley played in making him a much-coveted striker.
He said: "I owe a lot to Rangers, I really do, but Corby look to me like they want to move on and push out of the league. That is what I want, I want to enhance my career.
"Stafford picked me up when I was nothing, they made me into the player that I am now and I appreciate everything they have done for me. I respect Chris as a manager, he put a lot of trust in me and I was honoured to be his captain.
"But I just think it's my time to move on."
