Dudley's Olympic hopeful Ryan Aston signalled his arrival at welterweight with a resounding points victory over England international Thomas Langford.

Fighting for the first time at 71kg, down from middleweight on the orders of Team GB, Priory Park's Aston quickly showed that he had lost none of the power that had made him feared higher up.

The trademark short punch exchanges were as sharp as ever and he quickly trapped his Birmingham-based opponent on the ropes in the first round of their bout at the the Baggeridge Social Club in Lower Gornal last night.

Langford had moved forward with a sweeping move into the centre of the ring but got caught with a treat as he went on the attack.

Aston, whose heavy hands seems to have stayed with him, connected flush which was enough to leave the Hall Green ABC fighter heading to the ground head first then dangling stomach first on the second rope.

Throughout the three rounds the better punching came from Aston who took an unanimous points decision at the death.

This was a tough first outing at welterweight for Aston but he came through with flying colours.
