Kidderminster Harriers have offered left-back Lee Baker a new contract - as Gateshead look to end transfer-listed striker Robbie Matthews' Aggborough hell.

Harriers have shown their hand to Baker, the only player in his position on the books, for next season by making a firm offer of a deal to the out-of-contract defender.

The 21-year-old has made his name at Aggborough since joining from Albion 20 months ago, signing a permanent deal in January 2009 after a successful loan spell.

Now assistant boss Gary Whild, in charge while manager Steve Burr is away coaching with the England C team this week, has confirmed that Baker will get the chance to stay on.

He said: "Steve has already sat down with Lee and offered him the chance to extend his stay at the football club. Obviously we hope he accepts that deal and remains part of things here going forward.

"We've expressed quite strongly to Lee that we want to keep him on board. Obviously he is now considering what he wants to do, but it would be great to keep him with us."

Whild has also had to front an enquiry from their Blue Square Premier rivals for Matthews, with Harriers desperate to move on their signing from Salisbury last August.

But the eight-goal striker still has a year left on what is one the most highly-paid deals at Aggborough, which is really eating into plans for next season's playing budget.

Gateshead might not too much of a fit, as the player is still based in Wiltshire and would definitely have to relocate up north to make the move.

But Whild has allowed the ball to get rolling.

He said: "Gateshead have been in contact with us expressing an interest in taking Robbie on board there.

"I'm sure the two parties will now get together and we'll see whether or not they can thrash out an agreement that suits them both."
