Kidderminster Harriers manager Steve Burr has confirmed the club are hot on the trail of winger David Hankin as their next summer signing.

The manager is out of the country this week with his duties as assistant boss with the England C team, who have a game against the Republic of Ireland at Waterford United FC on Wednesday night.

But his new Harriers No 2, Gary Whild, will be keeping tabs on the 25-year-old free agent, who played under Burr at Stalybridge Celtic before leaving at the end of last season.

Keith Briggs has already come to Aggborough from the Bower Fold this summer and Hankin could be next, with the need for a wide man pressing after last season's top scorer Brian Smikle defected to join former boss Mark Yates at Cheltenham.

Another promising sign is that the former Preston youngster is relocating to the West Midlands from up north, and Burr admitted to already speaking to the player about a move.

He said: "David is one that interests me, a young lad who would have a good chance of making it a higher level.

"He is a player I have had discussions with and he is moving to the Birmingham area, which obviously is a bonus if we want to try and do something."

Burr is going to be away from the club for a couple of weeks, with a family holiday in Scotland lined up after his international duties come to an end at the weekend.

Having been a boss in his own right as recently as the end of last season at Redditch, the manager is confident his assistant will keep the good ship Harriers on course.

He said: "While I am away for the next couple of weeks, Gary is going to be looking after things.

"He's champing at the bit to get started, he's been a manager in his own right very recently so there's no problem with that at all."
