Proof of intent from McAughtrie
Stafford Rangers defender Craig McAughtrie believes the team have already proved they are not prepared to let the season end on a whimper.
Stafford Rangers defender Craig McAughtrie believes the team have already proved they are not prepared to let the season end on a whimper.
The Marston Road men beat Gainsborough Trinity last weekend in their final home game of the season, despite being already safe from relegation in the Blue Square North.
All Rangers' realistically have left to play for is bettering last season's finish, with half the job done on Saturday with a result that improved on their record as hosts in 2008/09.
Another win in the curtain call at Workington on Saturday would gurantee an advancr on last term's 18th place, and McAughtrie believes with the pressure off they can be even more dangerous.
He said: "You look at our last game, it was a hot sunny day where the players could have gone out there and gone through the motions.
"But we were a lot more relaxed, the nerves of needing points to be safe from relegation was off and we could play football with freedom."
Workington have little to play for either, having already secured a play-off spot, but are unbeaten in 10 league games with nine wins to show for it.
Rangers also have a 360-mile round trip to contend with but McAughtrie, on loan from Fleetwood, reckons pride will get him and his team-mates through.
He said: "Workington are the in-form team in this division and it's a tough game, a long way away from home.
"But I don't want people asking me where we finished and having to say 'one or two places above relegation, ' I want to be able to say 'mid-table.'
"I want to win every game, whether it's training or a match."
