Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme today returned to the club admitting his Molineux career is in limbo.

The 23-year-old played the final game of his three-month loan at QPR yesterday in a 4-0 defeat at Leicester and is due to return to Compton today.

Ikeme has enjoyed his most prolonged spell of first team football with 17 games at Loftus Road, plus two at Sheffield United and three at Charlton this season.

The 6ft 3ins goalkeeper is highly-rated by Wolves boss Mick McCarthy, who gave him a four-year contract last season and preferred him to Wayne Hennessey for an extended spell in 2008/09 before his injury curse struck again.

But with Marcus Hahnemann having dislodged Hennessey and been promised a new contract, Ikeme does not want to be third choice and be starved of senior football again.

He said: "I'm not sure where I stand when I go back. All I know is I need to play games and I'm not getting any at Wolves.

"I'm gutted to be going back. It was a great experience as I've played back-to-back and stayed injury-free.

"It's an awkward situation. I'm on good terms with everyone at Wolves, but I want to be playing. I've not even been on the bench. It's very frustrating. I want to play so much, you can't beat it.

"I don't like watching. Playing in the reserves just keeps you sharp, but it doesn't really mean anything, win, lose or draw.

"I want my games to mean something and have something to play for. I've loved it there."

Ikeme's last game for Wolves was in January 2009, a 3-1 defeat to Preston, one of his 12 Championship games played in the title-winning campaign.
