Walsall match-winner Troy Deeney is hoping his deciding late goal against Brentford is the start of a proper run for the team.

The Saddlers took all three points through Deeney 84th minute goal at the Banks's Stadium on Saturday, after Alex Nicholls had equalised Charlie MacDonald's opener.

It was their first home victory since November and moved them to ninth in League One, after back-to-back wins for only the third time this season, with Deeney admitting winning was vital.

He said: "It was a massive three points because Bristol Rovers lost, so it keeps the pressure on everyone else and hopefully leads into tomorrow against Yeovil to carry the run on.

"We were below par for about the first hour but then we started getting into the game more. It was crucial to pick up three points, after a game like Leeds we usually play badly so we're happy with the three points and now it's a run.

"Hopefully we can do over Yeovil and stand us in good stead going to Southampton.

The 21-year-old also reserved praise for Nicholls after the winger set up his 83rd minute winner – his 11th goal of the season.

Deeney said: "The fans gave Julian Gray the Man of the Match, but I think everyone knows it should have been Alex."
